How to make a passport photo

  1. 1 Take a picture against a plain wall in even daylight: face the camera, neutral expression, mouth closed, eyes open, no glasses glare, nothing covering the face. Keep some space above the head.
  2. 2 Pick the document. The presets set the frame (35x45 mm or 2x2 in) and the head height the rules require.
  3. 3 Add the picture. The face is found on your device and the frame is placed so the head is the right size; nothing is uploaded.
  4. 4 Check the crown and chin guides and drag them if needed. Optionally replace the background with white or light grey.
  5. 5 Download the single photo (600 dpi JPG) for online applications, or the 10x15 cm sheet to print at any photo counter and cut out.

Frequently asked questions

Will the photo be accepted?
The size, head height and positioning follow the official specifications for each preset. Acceptance also depends on things no tool can fix: lighting, expression, shadows, glasses and a plain background. Check the rules of the authority you apply to; this tool gives you the correct geometry, not a guarantee.
Where do the head measurements come from?
From the published rules: for example Germany asks for a face height of 32-36 mm on a 35x45 mm photo, the Netherlands 26-30 mm from chin to crown, the US a head of 1 to 1 3/8 inches on a 2x2 inch photo. The preset aims for the middle of each range.
How does the background replacement work?
A small segmentation model (U2Net-p, Apache 2.0) separates the person from the background on your device and the background is filled with a uniform colour. It works best when the original background is already fairly plain; hair edges may need a retake on busy backgrounds.
How do I print it?
Download the 10x15 cm sheet and order it as a normal 10x15 print at a drugstore or photo counter; it holds several photos at exactly the right size. Cut along the thin grey lines.
Is the picture uploaded anywhere?
No. Face detection (YuNet, Apache 2.0) and everything else run inside your browser; the picture never leaves your device.
